Canadian Woman Could Face Life in Prison After $12M of Meth Found in Luggage in Australia

A Canadian woman could face a maximum penalty of life in prison after Australia border officials seized 14.4 kilograms of meth on July 28, 2024.
The AFP has charged her with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug in connection with the seizure, the release said. She could face a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted.
Border officers said they found the illegal drugs while examining her luggage after she arrived at Brisbane International Airport on July 28 on a flight from Fiji. She had started her trip in Vancouver.
The packages allegedly found in her luggage were tested and returned a “presumptive positive result” for methamphetamine, the statement said, noting that the meth was in plastic packages wrapped inside vinegar-soaked towels and layered with coffee beans.
That amount of meth could have been sold for nearly “145,000 street deals” with an estimated value of $13.4 million Australian dollars (approximately C$12.3 million), the media release said.
No further arrests have been made in connection with the case, but the release said the AFP is continuing its investigation.
A freight forwarding employee from Australia was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison in July for his role in a scheme to import 100 kilograms of meth from Canada.
Alexandre Francoise Gerard Forcade will not be eligible for parole for 13 1/2 years and will be deported back to Canada upon his release.
In 2022, an estimated AU$155 million worth of cocaine and meth (about C$142 million today) was discovered inside a 1960 vintage Bentley sedan sent in a shipping container from Canada to Port Botany, just 12 kilometres south of Sydney.
Two Australian men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested and charged with importation of drugs and several other offences.
